There’s a phenom happening on Facebook these days that’s local and VERY interesting. Only a couple of weeks ago, someone we all know started a group on FB called Bosque County Buy Ad Sell or Give Away. There are similar pages on FB for other counties. Within 48 hours, there were over 400 members on our local page. At the point I write this, there are over 900.
People are listing items, putting out notices for things they need. It’s free. And those items are incredibly diverse. People are even asking for and receiving advice on finding work.
If you decide to join, please note that if one doesn’t adjust email settings, one’s email inbox will quickly flood with notices of new postings. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. (Go to Edit Settings, top right of page).
There are the usual items you might expect to find in any consignment or thrift shop such as clothing and furniture, baby items, appliances and even books. Folks have also offered dogs/puppies, six-toed cats, boats, cars, trucks, jeeps, 4×4’s, telescopes, snowboards, musical keyboard, calculator, cordless and cellular phones, computer speakers, laptops, large and small new and used appliances, college textbooks, and an I-phone. There’s even the occasional antique listing. The offerings are diverse and ongoing, too many for me to list. Carpentry help has been sought and found. Recommendations have been passed along. I have the feeling that many of the people “chatting” back and forth about buying, selling and giving might know each other. At the very least, that “six degrees of separation” thing must be in effect. Surely most folks aren’t going to stick someone they know with a car on the verge of committing suicide.
In one instance, someone had a friend whose house had burned. The family lost and needed everything ASAP, especially school clothing for the kids. A notice was listed on this page, and many items were received through generous donations! What great community spirit. Just as many of us had lost faith in government, weather, the price of gas and food, legions of politicians and rotten people in general, along comes something FREE with the potential to be very useful. And in some cases, it can warm the heart.
On this site, I’ve seen houses/land and deer leases for rent and sale, stock/horse trailers, trampoline, above-ground pool, U-haul hitch, and dozens of other things you never knew you needed until you saw them on the Bosque County Buy Ad Sell or Give Away page. Sometimes people do want to give something for free. Just come pick it up! What a wonderful opportunity this page affords for folks to barter and offer items to others who might need them. We all have things languishing in closets or storerooms that might be welcomed by someone else. One man’s “trash” is another man’s treasure. I notice a lot of maternity clothing and baby/ children’s clothing, toys, and other items being offered.
Exercise equipment is a particularly good category for passing along, if you ask me. So many of us purchase that stair-stepper or treadmill with the best of intentions but are weak with long-term follow through. It’s a common enough problem. When the simple act of purchase doesn’t magically seem to yield the desired result, the item begins to collect dust. I myself have experienced this phenomenon numerous times with a variety of exercise and sports stuff. There should be a special section on this FB page for exercise equipment alone. If you aren’t using that treadmill, maybe trade it for some weights. If the weights aren’t doing it for you, how about an ab roller? I’m afraid in my case, none of these things will work. I’ve noticed in the past that if I don’t use them, they just don’t help.
One woman jokingly posted an ad looking for a man with a sense of humor. Good luck on that one. You can’t have mine. As far as I’m concerned, the greatest romantic success that’s come from this page thus far has been that of a three-legged, male Yorkshire terrier in search of a loving home. As the result of the ad his foster master placed, he was adopted by an obviously dog-loving, kind soul who already owned a female, three-legged Yorkie. It should be a match made in heaven, and I hope it was love at first sight. (If it didn’t work out, don’t tell me. I don’t want to know). This was as good as anything that ever came from online dating. And that’s what I call a great story!
Thank you. We always enjoy your articles.
Just so you know that ad about a woman looking for a man actually did work!!! My brother is mentioned in this post and he found a girl that was not mentioned and they are doing great!!! Funny how this page works all kind of ways and they would have never met if it hadn’t been for that post!!!! LOL
Gene Ann, I always love reading your life in the country. Way talented are you and I’m sure you will agree – life is a journey!! Becki
Thanks for the kind remarks, friends.
I have opened a flea market in Clifton,Texas and would like my stuff to sell.
I think the site is a joke, if they don’t like anything you posted they kick you off the site, for something being a public site they sure have a lot of rules and if you question why they fuss about what people post on a buy sell trade PUBLIC site they just boot ya off and don’t say why. Don’t waste your time, since its got too many chiefs and no sense of common values on how to treat people
